Five Job Hunting Myths to Debunk for the Holidays

When it comes to poor job advice, one that perpetuates more than most is the idea that companies do not hire around Christmas time. While you might think it’s a good time to pause and rest, it’s actually better to continue. Here are some basic common myths about job seeking this month:

1. Employers do not hire in December
Despite what you might think, businesses do continue to hire this time of year. In fact, it might be a good time to look because other job searchers might pause their efforts. This makes fewer qualified applicants which might be in your favor. Also, this time of year many professionals quit their positions with the idea of starting a new year with a new adventure. Again, this makes looking for a job in December an advantage.

2. Employers do not have budget to hire until after the New Year
Instead of being short of funds, many companies may find themselves in the situation where they either use or lose what is left at the end of the year. This might work to your advantage as employers become eager to fill a position before it goes away. Regardless of budget, it’s a good idea to get moving in the process, as it can take time before you get to an offer.

3. Nothing happens after December 15 as everyone leaves for their holiday plans
Don’t assume people leave during the holiday season, especially the last couple years when COVID has made travel especially challenging for some. While it’s true some departments might slow down, others will take the time to catch up. Senior personnel especially might decide the quieter time is the best for reading applications or looking over resumes so don’t assume no one will be around to consider you.

4. Only available jobs are in retail
While it’s true retail does typically peak during the holidays, other industries such as delivery and hospitality also traditionally add employees during the holiday months. In many companies, December is when insurance open enrollment occurs so human resource teams might be looking for assistance in taking care of benefit-related questions and tasks. Many organizations might also be hiring to cover extended vacations or long absences. Sometimes these roles turn into permanent employment so make sure to follow your favorite company’s social media accounts.

5. Networking opportunities barely exist
Actually, the holidays are a good time to network with several holiday events to select and attend. Holiday get togethers can be easier to network in as people tend to be in a good mood and more relaxed. You might find it easier to start and maintain conversations as you can talk about holiday plans or further events. You don’t need to limit the events to only business-related ones but also open up to attending charity or social gatherings. Regardless of the type of event, don’t be afraid to ask for advice and contacts. Finding a new job is a lot about who you know and/or who you meet!
